I've heard very conflicting reports on how the moon phases affect billfishing. Anyone out there want to tell me the truth without trying to sell me something?

It all depends on where you are and what kind of Billfish you are after. When I was fishing Guam for Blue Marlin (18 years) the very best time was the months of June, July and August, the three days before and the three days after the full moon, but not the day of the full moon. The second best time of the year were the same months and days surrounding the new moon. Now I am here in Cabo San Lucas (5 years) and the same hold true for the Blue Marlin but it seems to be the reverse for Striped Marlin. I have talked to other Captains who have fished a variety of areas and while the moon phase is certainly important it seems that water temperature and availability of bait are stronger factors. I have always felt that when I have a chance to go, I go, I sure can't catch fish while sitting at home watching television!
