STELLWAGEN BANK, MA- Cod Fishing 5/7/01

The great weather ushered in by the southwest winds provided sea-kindly conditions for cod fisherman fishing the bank all week long. Four groups took advantage of the excellent forecast on Monday 4/30 including Robert Smiddy’s group from Randolph, MA fishing on the DECISIVE, Lou Taglia’s group from Old Bridge, NJ fishing on the JANET B, Brian Rose’s group from Bethpage,NY fishing on the KAAMA and Kai Cheng’s group from North Belmar, NY fishing on the DRIFTER. The shoal water on the Bank’s southern end provided the bulk of the early morning action. Doubles of market cod between 8 and 15 came over the rails keeping the mates busy unhooking and filleting cod most of the day. Middle bank shoals turned on in the afternoon. Mixed in were some nice pollock to 15 pound a few wolfish.

Tuesday 5/1, was the opener for the commercial season. We had charter vessels fishing all week right along side the commercial fisherman and found no decrease in the numbers of fish we were able to produce for clients. Mike Ajello from Staten Island had another great day cod fishing, catching more cod on this his second pilgrimage to Stellwagen than his group did on their earlier trip—this time fishing with only three anglers on the JANET B. Ron Daquila of Meriden, CT, a long-time party boat fisherman, treated his son, Mario, to his first offshore cod-fishing trip. As beginner’s luck would have it, Mario out-fished everyone on board taking top-honors in all categories—first fish, biggest and high rod on the DECISIVE.

John Johnson’s (Wilmington, DE) annual two-boat charter, re-scheduled from an earlier weather cancellation, fished the shoals, Wednesday, on the JANET B and DRIFTER. This trip proved to be their personal best exceeding their great results last season. By mid-day the group cried, “Uncle” having caught enough. The sand eels were stacked-up on the bottom with the cod foraging below providing fast and furious action right from the get go. A 25-pound cod, on the JANET B, was the pool winner. B-Fast’s Capt. Scott reported similar result with his group, Frank Draganchuk from Middletown, NY. Once again, the charter boats and commercial fisherman were fishing side-by-side without conflict. Frank’s group also headed in early, arm weary, with coolers full to the max with cod fillets.

Friday’s trips were “Skip” Wnoroski’s group from Union Beach, NJ, fishing on the JANET B and John Minikel’s group from Levittown , NY fishing the DECISIVE. One of the members of John’s group made a special effort to call me over the weekend to express his thanks for the great service, the great boat and Captain he was placed with and the numbers of cod, that were beyond all expectations, in their catch. Based on past seasons, we expect this excellent fishing to continue through June, predicated on how fast the water warms, regardless as to how long it takes to fill the commercial quota.
